Nowadays it is very important that everyone should have professional tax advice.

Vast numbers of people working at sea, and especially in the yachting sector, presume they do not owe tax or need not declare their income as they do not reside in a particular country. Year after year they become Tax Nomads, but eventually realise that they have limited options for their savings, cannot secure a mortgage as they have no declared income, or that they owe tax in a number of different countries.

People working at sea who are UK or EEA tax residents may be eligible for Seafarers’ Earnings Deductions, meaning they are eligible for 100% tax relief on their earnings.

Anyone who has worked on a ship outside the UK long enough may be eligible for this.

Seafarers who were not resident in the UK or an EEA State, but working for UK shipping companies may also be eligible to claim their tax back.

It is very important that everyone working at sea keeps the following records up to date:

  • accurate travel vouchers such us airplane tickets,

  • hotel bills

  • Discharge book

  • midnight position of the vessel

  • freeboard logs of the ships worked on if available.
